Fwd: interesting

Think about this!

December 29, 2012 marked the 122nd Anniversary of the murder of 297 Sioux Indians at Wounded Knee Creek on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota .  These 297 people, in their winter camp, were murdered by federal agents and members of the 7th Cavalry who had come to confiscate their firearms for their own safety and protection.   The slaughter began after the majority of the Sioux had peacefully turned in their firearms.  The Calvary began shooting, and managed to wipe out the entire camp.  Two hundred of the 297 victims were women and children.  About 40 members of the 7th Cavalry were killed, but over half of them were victims of fratricide from the Hotchkiss guns of their overzealous comrades-in-arms.  Twenty members of the 7th Cavalry's death squad were deemed National Heroes and were awarded the Medal of Honor for their acts of heroism.

We hear very little of Wounded Knee today.  It is usually not mentioned in our history classes or books.  What little that does exist about Wounded Knee is normally a sanitized Official Government Explanation.  And there are several historically inaccurate depictions of the events leading up to the massacre which appear in movie scripts and are not the least bit representative of the actual events that took place that day.

Wounded Knee was among the first federally backed gun confiscation attempts in United States history.  It ended in the senseless murder of 297 people.

Before you jump on the emotionally charged bandwagon for gun-control, take a moment to reflect on the real purpose of the Second Amendment, the right of the people to take up arms in defense of themselves, their families, and property in the face of an invading army or an oppressive government.  The argument that the Second Amendment only applies to hunting and target shooting is asinine.  When the United States Constitution was drafted, hunting was an everyday chore carried out by men and women to put meat on the table each night and target shooting was an unheard of concept.  Musket balls were a precious commodity and were certainly not wasted on target shooting.  The Second Amendment was written by people who fled oppressive and tyrannical regimes in Europe and it refers to the right of American citizens to be armed, should such tyranny arise in the United States .

As time goes forward, the average citizen in the United States continually loses little chunks of personal freedom or liberty.  Far too many times, unjust gun control bills were passed and signed into law under the guise of for your safety or protection.  The Patriot Act signed into law by G.W. Bush, was expanded and continues under Barack Obama.  It is just one of many examples of American citizens being stripped of their rights and privacy.  Now, the Right to Keep and Bear Arms is on the table and will most likely be attacked to facilitate the path for the removal of our firearms, all in the name of safety.

Before we blindly accept whatever new firearms legislation that is about to be doled out, we should stop and think about something for just one minute.  Evil does exist in our world.  It always has and always will.  Throughout history evil people have committed evil acts.  In the Bible one of the first stories is that of Cain killing Abel.  We cannot legislate evil into extinction.

Evil exists all around us, but looking back at the historical record of the past 200 years, across the globe, evil and malevolence is most often found in the hands of those with the power, the governments.  That greatest human tragedies on record and the largest loss of innocent human life can be attributed to governments.  Who do the governments always target?  Scapegoats and enemies within their own border, but only after they have been disarmed to the point where they are no longer a threat.  Ask any Native American, and they will tell you it was inferior technology and lack of arms that contributed to their demise.  Ask any Armenian why it was so easy for the Turks to exterminate millions of them and they will answer We were disarmed before it happened.  Ask any Jew what Hitler's first step prior to the mass murders of the Holocaust was.  The confiscation of firearms from the people.

Wounded Knee is the prime example of why the Second Amendment exists and why we should vehemently resist any attempts to infringe on our Rights to Bear Arms.  Without the Second Amendment we will be stripped of any ability to defend ourselves.

Please pass along with the widest possible distribution possible!

Kerry Signs Global Gun Control Accord in Wake of Obama's Renewed Calls for "Transformation"

Shortly before he was reelected, President Obama proclaimed to the rapturous cheers and applause of his supporters, "We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America."

Many at the time wondered exactly what sort of "fundamental transformation" was needed in what was already the most prosperous, peaceful, just, egalitarian, and powerful nation the world has ever known. A simple return to first principles, some would argue, is the better prescription to preserve the country's preeminence in the future.

Nevertheless, taking his cues directly from the anti-gunner's playbook we reported on recently, President Obama last Sunday turned a memorial service for victims of a heinous crime into a platform to call for yet another "transformation," this one in the federal gun laws under which the nation's violent crime rate has fallen to a 42-year low. In a breathtaking display of opportunism and self-centeredness, an event meant to display a nation's mourning and remembrance degenerated into an expression of the president's personal agenda and his vision of a "transformed" America.

Senate.gov Invents Second Amendment Controversy

Perhaps we were too harsh on textbook publishers last week for botching the proper interpretation of the Second Amendment, as even those in charge of the official website of a body sworn to "support and defend the Constitution of the United States" apparently can't be expected to get it right. The official website of the United States Senate features a "Virtual Reference Desk" section on the Constitution which offers an explanation of the Second Amendment that reads, "Whether this provision protects the individual's right to own firearms or whether it deals only with the collective right of the people to arm and maintain a militia has long been debated." The passage downplays the individual right to keep and bear arms guaranteed by the Second Amendment and gives undue credence to an interpretation of the amendment long-held in disrepute and rejected by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2008 and 2010.

Not a Peep from Obama: Violent Crime Now at a 42-Year Low

Last week, the FBI released its national crime report for 2012. By a slight margin, the nation's violent crime rate decreased in 2012--relative to 2011--making it the lowest it has been since 1970. Compared to 1991, when it hit an all-time high, violent crime is down by 49 percent. The nation's murder rate was unchanged in 2012; still lower than any time since 1963 and at nearly an all-time low.

Between 2011 and 2012, 24 states and the District of Columbia experienced decreases in their murder rates. There was no correlation of these trends with the severity of the states' or the District's gun control laws. Troubled Detroit, under Michigan's law requiring a permit to purchase a handgun, had the highest murder rate among large cities, followed by Baltimore, under Maryland's law imposing a seven-day waiting period on handgun purchases.

NICS Will Continue to Operate if There Is a Government Shutdown

NRA-ILA has received a number of questions on the status of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in the case of a government shutdown.

Law enforcement activities are designated as essential services and do not shut down even if the Congress and President fail to agree on funding legislation. The NICS system will continue to operate.

The Government Uses License Plate Scanners to Track Your Every Move

The Government Uses License Plate Scanners to Track Your Every Move

Automatic license plate readers are the most widespread location tracking technology you've probably never heard of. Mounted on patrol cars or stationary objects like bridges, they snap photos of every passing car, recording their plate numbers, times, and locations. At first the captured plate data was used just to check against lists of cars law enforcement hoped to locate for various reasons (to act on arrest warrants, find stolen cars, etc.). But increasingly, all of this data is being fed into massive databases that contain the location information of many millions of innocent Americans stretching back for months or even years.

Outrage of the Week: New App Targets Gun Owners

This week's outrage comes to us from a rather unlikely source: the Google Play app store. The new app is called the Gun Geo Marker, and encourages users to "geolocate dangerous guns and owners" in their communities.

According to Google Play, "Geolocation means marking dangerous sites on the App's map so that you and others can be aware of the risks in your neighborhood." Think about that for a minute. The purpose of the app--other than sensationalism and profit--is to encourage people to anonymously "flag" locations in their community they subjectively deem "dangerous" and to make that information as public as possible. The probability for abuse and the certainty of inaccurate "reporting" cannot be overstated. What's to keep people from marking any location for any reason at all? Nothing. The practice is not only a serious invasion of privacy, but would also be just as dangerous and irresponsible as publishing the names of concealed-carry permit holders in local papers.

The app could enable thieves to target and steal firearms from law-abiding gun owners, while conversely advertising that other residences are "gun free" and therefore easy targets for criminals.

"Fast & Furious" Remains Out of Sight and Therefore Out of Mind

With all of the scandals the Obama administration has been involved in of late, it's not surprising that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' ill-fated "Operation Fast and Furious" would fade from the public's memory. Conceived as a secretive "gun-walking" scheme, "Fast and Furious" instead became a deadly debacle that came to light with the murder of U.S. Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry.

Numerous investigations and hearings culminated with the nation's top law enforcement officer, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, being found in contempt of Congress. That was more than a year ago, and Holder remains in contempt of Congress for his role in the operation and subsequent cover-up. That's likely to remain the case, as President Obama invoked executive privilege to protect Holder from providing requested, and potentially further incriminating, documents to Congress.

While "Fast and Furious" has been relegated to the back burner, reports of continuing carnage directly attributable to the failed operation continue.

So Much for Zero Tolerance

We've been reporting with great frequency on ridiculous cases involving over-zealous school officials misinterpreting and wrongly enforcing "zero-tolerance" rules.

In March, and again last month, we reported on one of the most outrageous cases--that of a seven-year-old Baltimore, Md. student who was suspended for two days for the nefarious act of shaping a breakfast pastry into what his teacher thought looked like a gun. Yes, his teacher thought a breakfast pastry was enough of a danger to take the little boy directly to the principal's office for immediate discipline, to include a suspension and a permanent record.

Last month we also reported on a remarkably severe "zero-tolerance" case in Calvert County, Md., where a 5-year-old brought a cowboy-style, orange-safety-tipped toy cap gun onto his school bus to show to his friend, who had allegedly brought a water gun on the bus a day earlier. As a result, the kindergartner was questioned by school officials for more than two hours before he wet his pants and his mother was called. How long does it take to ask a 5-year-old a few questions? His sister--a first-grader--was also questioned, and the little boy was threatened with a 10-day suspension--which would keep him out of classes the rest of the school year--and the prospect of the matter becoming a part of the his permanent school record.
